ARCHAEOLOGY PROGRAMME - SEASON 3


In celebration of Archaeology and Local History Month, Lost Landscapes is researching the fascinating site at Amisfield Walled Garden in Haddington:



Digging the Glasshouse

11am – 4pm Sat 3 September.


Come and join us as we begin investigating the Amisfield Walled Garden. Participants will have a chance to experience laying out the dig site and kicking off the excavation. Booking is essential.


Walk & Talk: The History of Amisfield Estate

11am – 12.30pm Sun 4 September.


An informative walk starting at Amisfield Walled Garden with Kate Rycroft discussing the history of the Amisfield Estate. Amisfield House, designed by architect Isaac Ware was described in The Buildings of Scotland as "the most important building of the orthodox Palladian school in Scotland." John Henderson built the walled garden in 1783 but today all that remains of the Amisfield Estate is the summer house, walled garden, ice house and gates.

Dendrochronology Workshop

2 – 4pm, Sun 4 September.


Dendrochronology, the science of tree-ring dating, is most frequently used for archaeological dating and climate studies but it also allows woods and designed landscape features to be dated and better understood. This workshop will be led by Dr Coralie Mills, a dendrochronologist & environmental archaeologist. Booking is essential.


Family Archaeology Workshops

11am – 3pm, Sat 10 September.


Groups of families can take part in one-hour archaeology sessions that include a miniature dig with real finds to discover! Workshops sessions start at 11am, 12pm and 2pm. Booking is essential.


Doors Open Day

11am – 4pm, Sun 11 September.


Amisfield House was demolished in 1928 but its wonderful Walled Garden is A-listed and encloses eight acres. The Summer House is B-listed. Guided tours on the hour from 11.00am to 4:00pm. No booking required.
